Today a woman asked me to put her wig on for her behind the reference desk…she gave me the hairnet and told me to put it on…need I say more? How far does “good customer service” go? Is this in my job description?

Having computers in the Children’s section
Today I was accosted by a very angry parent. She was upset because we have computers for children in the children’s department of the library. Her anger stemmed from the fact that when she comes into the library, she should not have to “tear her child away from the computer” because her child should be there for books. She said to me that it was “so sad” that we have computers in the library instead of just focusing on books for kids. Our children’s book collection is on the brink of 50, 000 and we have only 2 kids computers. I think we are definitely focusing on the importance of BOOKS and READING to children. But, children also now are needing to and are learning computer skills earlier in schools and we can help them by providing technology and computers for kids. We provide them for adults; young people should get the same. Also, not every child is fortunate to have a computer in their home so we can hopefully give them a chance to use something they may not be able to experience. It is my opinion that having to tear your child away from wanting to use the computer is an issue between you and your child, not between the library and the child.
Becoming serious about my blog
Ok, so I started this blog as a work project to orient myself about the world of blogs and how they are created. I have read other online blogs and have used one at work but if I want to be responsible for creating one for the Library, then I better know what I’m doing! So, I’m going to think of this as my little online journal. I am not sure quite how I feel about having such a public forum for my random thoughts but I do like the anonoymousness (is this even a word?) of it. I hope to post something each day – possibly about work and other miscellaneous things. In other words, I do hope this blog will become more interesting as the days go on.
